Dear George

Isn’t it exciting you going off to visit five parks in America. I have always hoped you would get interested in landscaping and flowers, ever since I took you to Regents Park when you were young. The lifetime membership to the National Trust that I bought you for your Christening was not wasted after all! Do let me know all about the flowers and special plantings at all the parks you visit.

I see from your blog (I’m not sure that’s a real word that your Grandpapa would approve of) that you are driving an SUV. “What on earth was that,” I wondered. I asked Uncle Max and he was unsure but I rang Edwina and she told me it stood for Sports Utility Vehicle. I told this to Uncle Max and he thought it sounded like a sort of touring dust-bin lorry or something – how exciting and imaginative of you.

Hugs and kisses
Aunt Bobo

PS The friend you are travelling with, James, seems a nice boy.

Dear George

Goodness, George! Thank you for the exciting message that you left on the answer phone last night. I am glad you and James are combining your interest in parks and gardening with local musical recitals. Your call from the Blazing Saddles Hootenanny Ho-down sounded most convivial.

I shouldn’t worry about James too much. When they are feeling lonely, lots of people buy strangers drinks in bars, although it was certainly generous of him to buy beers for all 120 of the tattooed motor cycle enthusiasts, they certainly sound a most colourful and friendly group.

Do let me know about the plantings in the parks.

Uncle Max sends his regards.

Lots of love

Aunt Bobo

PS: Cousin Toby’s appeal did not go too well, but he is settling down now and making new friends. With all the time on his hands, this time he is determined to learn to write so with a bit of luck by next Christmas, if he is out on parole, we’ll all be getting cards from him.

Dear George,

How excited you sounded on the telephone last night, you do seem to be having lots of fun!

The proper name for two-tone, black and white shoes is correspondent shoes. I am not sure that James is right in insisting that they are suitable for wearing to the office. I checked with Mr Wright and he laughed and said that he had come to expect anything of you ever since you turned up in one plimsoll and one patent leather dancing pump, and if you were brave enough to wear your new shoes to the office on purpose he would not send you home this time.

Uncle Max always says that two-tone shoes are the sort of footwear that the male correspondent in a divorce case wears and that is why they are named so. I am not sure about that, but I do remember when I was five Grandpapa taking me for tea at the River Room at the Savoy and bumping into Uncle Teddy. Aunt Ruth wasn’t there, but Uncle Teddy was with a very pretty lady who I later learnt was an exotic dancing contortionist that he had met on a business trip. I will always remember that Uncle Teddy was wearing two-tone shoes at the time.

Do write and let me know about the flowers.

Lots of love

Aunt Bobo

PS Just received your photograph from the Blazing Saddles Hootenanny Ho-Down. Your new friends do seem very jolly and friendly. How wonderful that you were able to go on a fancy dress gala night. Your friends certainly made a lot of effort with their costumes, all true American characters, a GI, a red Indian, a policeman, and a motor cyclist. James looks very fine as a cowboy, although wearing chaps but no trousers so late a night, he is in danger of catching a bad cold.
